 The wonders of the universe, seen and unseen, surround us.

But within us there is a greater marvel and we shall all be changed.

God is working within us and among us despite our imperfections, so that the entire universe may be redeemed!

Welcome to God’s great plan.  Share with joy this service.

Merciful God, we know that our faith sometimes runs low.

We have testing experiences in our lives and cannot imagine how you or anyone else can help us or others.

By your grace Lord, we pray that you will forgive us and renew us.

Renew us with trust that sees beyond the surface of things and guide us into the opportunities and resources made available in your Spirit’s marvelous workings.  In the name of Jesus we pray.  Amen.

Invocation

Call to Worship

The heavens cannot keep silent!

The skies are shouting, too!

God’s majesty compels creation to speak.

To speak, and to shout and to sing.

Day and night, night and day. God’s glory is the talk of the universe.

The roar of praise reaches the farthest star in the cosmos.

The sound of “hallelujahs” is deafening!

The chorus of worship simply cannot be contained.

Let us join creation in ascribing honor to our God!

The heavens cannot keep silent, and neither can we!

                             (Based on Psalm 19)

Prayer of Confession

Exodus 20: 1 – 17

Gracious God, we confess we have made your revelation, written on our hearts, a great burden, stone tablets of enormous weight that we expect others to carry and obey.

We hold others to the letter of the law, while we ourselves cling to what we call its “spirit.”

SILENT MEDITATION

Forgive us, even as we remove the burden from others.

Call us together in a community of service.

These things we pray to you, who bore the cross for us, in whose resurrection we are raised.  Amen.

Invocation

Call to Worship

The God whom we worship calls us to discipleship:

To follow where Christ leads;

and obey what Christ commands;

To follow when it is not easy;

To follow when others think us foolish;

To follow where justice leads;

To follow where love guides us;

To follow even when it leads to the cross.

Come let us worship the living God,

Who loves us and leads us and promises to never let us go!

Thanksgiving Prayer

Prayer of Confession

1 John 1: 9

Gracious God, we confess, we want our truths simpler.

We want you to be a Christ who takes us to glory, who makes life easier for us, who lifts us above daily trails and troubles.

SILENT MEDITATION

Lord, we don’t want the ways of suffering, service and sacrifice.

Help us to learn to travel the path you have shown in Jesus your Christ.  Empower us to be your disciples; faithfully serving you through all the seasons of our life.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.

Call to Worship

We gather to worship God who alone can heal us and make us whole.

Open our hearts that you may transform our lives with your healing touch.

We gather to worship God who alone speaks the words that calls forth life.

Open our minds that you may transform us with your authoritative Word.

We gather to worship God in spirit and truth.

Open our spirits that you may transform us by your powerful Spirit.

Thanksgiving Prayer

Prayer of Confession

Mark 1: 21 – 28

Holy One, you established your realm anew on earth in the advent of Jesus. By your authority vested in him and his obedience to your purpose, the power of evil was over, sin and death were defeated.

Yet we live as though this were not so, as though human power were supreme, as though we could save ourselves.

SILENT MEDITATION

Lord, we confess the fears that grip us, and the credence we give to false prophets and worldly wisdom.

As members of this society, we are both the oppressed and the oppressors, and greatly in need of your deliverance.  Forgive our sin and set us free from all that would hold us in bondage.  We pray in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.  Amen.

Thanksgiving Prayer

Prayer of Confession

Isaiah 40:  1-5

God of Advent, as we await your coming, we confess the rough places of our own hearts.

We confess the angers that become stony roadblocks to your peace, and the mountains of hurt feelings we leave behind us through our thoughtlessness.

SILENT MEDITATION

Gracious God, we ask for your forgiveness because we have been all these things and more.

Straighten our spirits, God of Advent, that our lives may reveal not our brokenness, but that your glory may be revealed in all we say and do.  We pray in the name of Jesus.  Amen.

Invocation

Call to Worship

Seek the Lord, while he may be found.

We call upon God who is near to us.

Let the wicked abandon their way of life.

May all people return to God who is merciful.

The Lord longs to forgive and restore us.

God’s thoughts are different from ours; they surpass anything we might think.

God’s ways are not like ours; they are beyond what we could imagine.

The Lord’s words never return void but always accomplish their purposes.

God’s word is everlasting.  May it take root and grow in us.

                   Adapted from Isaiah 55: 6-11

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Exodus 3: 1 – 5

Prayer of Confession

Gracious God, we grieve that we are not always those who follow you in spirit and in truth.

When you call upon us to lose our lives in order to gain a greater life, sometimes our hearts shrink with fear as we wonder what that might mean for us.

SILENT MEDITATION

Lord, we often decide that “easy and safer” is the pathway to life.

We cannot imagine that true life is held within struggle.  Have mercy on us, loving God.  Call us on into life, Jesus Christ.  For you are the Way, the Truth and the Life.  Amen.

DATELINE:   August 2011

EastminsterPresbyterian.wordpress.com/

 May was a busy month at your church.  Don Evans spoke on the first Sunday. Dr. Rev. Joe Wooddell spoke on the 22d.  On the 15th, we traveled to St. Luke to share worship at their church.

June started out great as we hosted St. Luke at our church, sharing communion during the worship and lunch afterward. Margaret Bryan blessed us with a beautiful song during worship on the 12th.

July – John Skeel spoke to us on the 10th.  We enjoyed hearing all the wonderful new things John is doing in Uganda. He brought many pictures including those of the Douglas Riddiough School John has built and dedicated in Doug’s honor. We had a very special blessing from Zach on the 20th, when he performed a beautiful recital for us that evening.  A generous crowd enjoyed the hour-long performance and refreshments later. Thank you Zach!!  You can do that one anytime!

                   # 146   Revive Us Oh Lord

Invocation

Call to Worship

 Jesus calls us to follow him, to live as he lives, to love as he loves and to serve with him in the world.

But we already have leaders to follow, commitments to fulfill, plans to implement.

Jesus calls us to follow him as our first allegiance and to go where he goes.

But we do not know where Jesus may lead, and discipleship is risky.

There is assurance with the calling, for those Jesus calls, he strengthens for the journey.

Let us follow him in trust, and worship him together.

Song                   # 242   We Have Come Into His House

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Hebrews 4:  14-16

Prayer of Confession

Gracious God, we hear you, we know you are seeking us….but ….we are pulled in so many directions.  The requirements of discipleship are overwhelming.

Our families and our friends need our attention.  We have worthy projects to do.  Forgive our holding back and the self-protective reasons we give.

SILENT MEDITATION

Lord, forgive our failure to make a leap of faith trusting in you.

Give us spiritual food, so that we might have the energy to follow you, in the way of your Son the Christ, in whose name we pray.  Amen.
